Cucumber
Storage Tips
Do not wash before storing, only wash right before consuming. Store in a sealed plastic bag or in your crisper drawer of the refrigerator. Best to store as dry as possible, because any residual moisture in the bag will cause the cucumber or age faster and eventually get slimy. For long term storage, wrap the cucumber in clean dish towel or paper towel inside of the plastic bag and place in crisper drawer. Use within a week of harvest.
Culinary Tips
We grow several different types of cucumber. “Salad Cucumbers” which are small pickling cucumbers which are the perfect size for a lunchtime salad so you don’t have to cut into a cucumber and only use half of it. Salad cucumbers have a firmer texture, a little less water content and are great for salads, snacking or pickling.
Slicing Cucumbers last the longest in the fridge because they have a thicker skin. We often like to peel these before eating, and love to throw them into salads or even smoothies. Try throwing a peeled slicing cucumber into a blender with some mint, watermelon, lime and a pinch of salt and you’ll have the most refreshing and hydrating drink for the summer.
English Cucumbers are very tender in texture and bite, have thin skin and a distinctly sweet flavor. Their seeds are small and the water content is lower than a slicing cucumber. These are really fun to experiment with different knife skills because of the texture and low water content. We love cutting these into very fine matchsticks and putting them into fresh spring rolls, making finely sliced cucumber salads with fresh herbs or cutting them up ahead of time, sticking them in a Tupperware and having a quick snack to dip in hummus. Because the skin is so thin, these are great for smash cucumber salads too
