Ground Husk Cherries

 Storage Tips

  • Store at room temperature, in a cool, dry place with lots of good airflow in your home, for best flavor and to ensure the husk cherries continue to ripen, do not put in the refrigerator. Be sure to keep the papery husks on the cherries until ready to consume to protect the fruit. Will last up to five days in the right conditions.

  • You can tell when the husk cherry is ripe when the husk looks very papery and dry and looses any yellow-green tinge (see photo on this page for reference). When you open the husk, the “cherry” should have a golden color. Occasionally you’ll find a cherry that is slightly green which means it’s not quite ready to eat! You can stick it back in the husk and let it ripen for a day or two before eating.

Culinary Tips

  • These little “cherries” are related to the tomato family, and have a wonderful pineapple flavor. Remove husk to reveal the golden berry within. We like to snack on them as finger food, but you can make them into jam, toss into salads, fruit bowls, put on oatmeal, adorn cocktails, and so much more. One year we made a husk cherry and ginger jam that was to die for. Experiment with these little gems and enjoy this amazing seasonal flavor! If you have a lot and want to save them before they go bad, throw them into a ziplock bag and into the freezer for winter desserts.
